The Complete Central Asia Packing List

Desert heat, mountain cold, and everything in between โ€” here's exactly what to pack for a Central Asia trip.

Central Asia is one of the most varied travel destinations on earth. In a single two-week trip, you might move from 40 ยฐC desert heat in Uzbekistan to sub-zero temperatures on the Pamir Highway. Packing for this range requires some thought.

Clothing

Layers are everything. Even in summer, evenings in the mountains cool rapidly. Pack:

  • Lightweight, breathable shirts (quick-dry fabrics are ideal)
  • A mid-layer fleece or light down jacket
  • A waterproof outer shell (also useful as a windbreaker on mountain roads)
  • One pair of lightweight trousers and one pair of hiking trousers
  • Modest clothing for visiting mosques and religious sites โ€” long sleeves and covered legs for women; long trousers for men
  • Comfortable walking shoes for cities
  • Sturdy hiking boots if you plan any trekking
  • Sandals for guesthouses and teahouses

Health & Hygiene

  • High-SPF sunscreen โ€” the UV at altitude is ferocious
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Insect repellent (particularly in lowland areas near water)
  • Altitude sickness medication (consult your doctor before travel)
  • Water purification tablets or a filter bottle
  • Rehydration sachets
  • A compact first aid kit

Documents & Money

  • Passport with at least six months' validity
  • Printed copies of all visas and e-visas
  • USD cash โ€” widely accepted and useful as backup in every country
  • A debit card that works internationally (check ATM availability before you go)
  • A small notebook with key contacts and addresses written down (your phone will die)

Tech

  • A universal travel adaptor
  • A high-capacity power bank
  • An offline maps app loaded with your destinations
  • A SIM card (local SIMs are cheap and available at airports and markets)
  • A headlamp โ€” power cuts are not uncommon in rural guesthouses

The One Thing People Forget

A good scarf or shawl. It serves as a blanket on overnight trains, a head covering in religious sites, a dust shield on desert roads, and a pillow at a stretch. Pack one. You will use it every day.

Pack light โ€” doing laundry is easy and cheap across Central Asia, and a heavy bag will exhaust you faster than any journey.
